First casts!

Over the past week i've been busy finishing the mould, creating a fibreglass sheel to contain it and casting my first resin copies! Progress Pics 3 for the latest.

Here's how things stand with my first 'pull'.

My vac-form machine is now made and ready for when the plastic arrives for the visors.

Sculpt finished...in 3D!

I finished the sculpt of the helmet a day or two ago after days of sanding. Before I moved onto making a mould, I had to polish it to a high shine with wax so as to get a good plastic finish when replicated. I took some pictures and have even managed to create a stereocopic 3D image! Check this tutorial out for how to see the 3D in all it's glory here!

And here it is after the first coat of silicone looking rather alien...

The silicone mould was actually completed today but it was too dark to take pictures using my webcam, the only camera i've got at the moment.

Check back soon!

Sanding, filling, sanding, filling, sanding, filling....

That process has moved the build to a few days from silicone mould making!!

Helmet currently stands as this, the ears are taped over as I don't want the primer filling in the engraved design. Progress Pictures 2 for the latest as the first tab's getting a bit big.

Work starts again!

Well after a two semesters of not touching the helmet, i've started modelling again.

Yesterday and today have proved extremely productive as I decided to give up mixing Bondo with spatulas and used my hands (not advised). Mixing hazardous pastes like this allowed me to create the rear of the helmet in only 2 days! Given that the front took nearly four weeks to make, quite an improvement! And my skin hasn't disintegrated!

Pictures have been added to the Progress Pictures tab.

Updates to follow soon, as I plan to sell more than one of these!! Interest to be emailed to sendmeanemailrightaway@gmail.com.

From small acorns grow mighty Daft Punk helmets...

Prior to starting this project from scratch, I had tried like many to create the Pepakura version of this helmet but was not impressed with the results due scaling but mainly because it didn't fit my head very well! I was aware of Volpin's version of the helmet but thought that because of all the different materials that he was using I'd never be able to get anywhere near the finish that he has produced. However this summer was different...

Starting in July of 2010 I bought a few 'ingredients' to get started and cracked on for about 4 weeks straight to get as far as possible.

It currently stands at this!!!
